Masterclass "Introduction to Kinetic Theory: Boltzmann equation and related topics"

Sep 16, 2014 – Dec 17, 2014
Room Y27 H12, Campus Irchel, University of Zurich Wintherthurerstrasse 190, Zurich 8057, Switzerland
#

After introducing some general features about kinetic models, we will focus on the Boltzmann equation. In the first part of the course the Cauchy problem associated to the Boltzmann equation will be discussed.

The second part of the course will be devoted to the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from a classical N particle system, contained in the celebrated paper of Lanford (1975). In the third part we will present some open problems related to the Boltmann equation and to other kinetic equations, such as the Landau equation (better known as the Landau-Fokker-Planck equation).
