We are glad to announce that our SwissMAP Master Class in Mathematical Physics student, Ilya Losev, received the Edouard Gans 2020 Prize for his thesis: “On maximal subgroups and other aspects of branch groups” under the supervision of our director Stanislav Smirnov.
Our member Nicolas Gisin (UNIGE) will be a speaker at the next SIT - Schaffhausen Institute of Technology yearly event which will take place online 16th December 2020.
SwissMAP members please save the dates for our next Annual General Meeting which will take place in Les Diablerets from 12-15 September 2021. More information will be available nearer the date.
Our member Maryna Viazovska is part of the organizing committee of the Simon Center for Geometry and Physics, “Sphere Packing and the Conformal Bootstrap” workshop.
The Mathscope philosophy is to manipulate first in order to understand better afterwards. It is with this in mind that Mathscope launches a new challenge on Instagram. Every month, an object and a challenge associated to it will be proposed on the Instagram account @mathscope_unige.
Appointed professor at age 29, Hugo Duminil-Copin is considered one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his generation. A profession for which he had never felt a passion before he plunged into it entirely.
The Swiss National Science Foundation has awarded our member Juhan Aru (EPFL) an Eccellenza Grant. Our member Juhan Aru (EPFL), who holds the Chair of Random Geometry has received an Eccellenza Grant. His research lies mainly in probability theory, in the domain of random planar geometry. 
Since spring 2020, the CO₂ working group headed by our member Niklas Beisert (ETH Zurich) has discussed and proposed suitable measures to the questions around how members of the Department of Physics could contribute to a reduction of CO₂ emissions and how successful research and teaching would be possible without advancing global warming?
Our members Niklas Beisert (ETH Zurich), João Penedones (EPFL) Susanne Reffert (UniBe) and Julian Sonner (UNIGE) are organizing the “Strings, Fields and Holograms” international Conference, which will be taking place from 11-15th October 2021, Monte Verità Conference Center - Ascona, Switzerland.
We invite you to read the Autumn 2020 Campus Junior Magazine “The Magic of Maths”’ (FR). Campus Junior is the scientific magazine of the University of Geneva for children from 8 to 12 years old and, at the occasion of Colloque Wright, our members Shaula Fiorelli, Élise Raphael, Hugo Duminil-Copin, Louis-Hadrien Robert, Yvan Velenik and Sandy Moody from Mathscope contributed to the special issue dedicated to mathematics.

If you did not get the chance to attend James Maynard’s (University of Oxford) Journée Georges de Rham talk: “Approximating reals numbers by fractions” the video of his talk is now also available through our YouTube channel.
Mathscope’s new video “Can sound be seen? From a physical problem to a numerical method” tells us a story generated by the fascination of mathematicians for a physical discovery. 
The Winter School will be offered in a hybrid format this year. Please register on the school's website if you wish to attend onsite or online.
The next internal SwissMAP Site visit will take place in May. as usual, this event will bring together the SNSF Review Panel members and SwissMAP Steering Committee and Project and Group Leaders. 
The conference has been postponed to 2021, (previous date: 22-25 June 2020). This conference will bring together students and close collaborators of Jean-Pierre Eckmann on the occasion of his 50 years at the University of Geneva. 
The conference has been postponed to July 26 - 30, 2021 to be held again at CERN. Gauge/Gravity Duality has established itself as a significant link between gravitation and quantum field theory. 
We are happy to announce that Geneva will be hosting the next International Congress of Mathematical Physics in 2021. The event is expected to attract around 800 participants from around the world.
