EMS Women in Mathematics Day 2024

27 Apr 2024

The Women in Math Committee (WiM) of the European Mathematical Society is organizing an online event called "EMS/WiM Day" on May 17th, 2024. The committee is chaired by Mikaela Iacobelli (ETH Zurich). The event is part of a larger initiative called "May 12th", which celebrates women in Mathematics in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani.

The event consists of scientific talks (at the level of a Colloquium talk) of two distinguished speakers, which will take place online on Friday, May 17th, 2024 with the following schedule

(timings in CEST):

15:00 Welcome 15:15 Carola Bibiane Schönlieb (University of Cambridge).

Mathematical imaging: From geometric PDEs and variational modelling to deep learning for images.

16:15 Dusa McDuff (Columbia University) Embedding problems in symplectic topology.

Carola Bibiane Schönlieb (University of Cambridge)

Title: Mathematical imaging: From geometric PDEs and variational modelling to deep learning for images

Abstract: Images are a rich source of beautiful mathematical formalism and analysis. Associ- ated mathematical problems arise in functional and non-smooth analysis, the theory and numerical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations, inverse problems, harmonic, stochastic and statistical analysis, and optimisation. In this talk we will learn about some of these mathematical problems, about variational models and PDEs for image analysis and inverse imaging problems as well as recent advances where such mathematical models are complemented and replaced by deep neural networks. The talk is furnished with applications to art restoration, forest conservation and cancer research.

Dusa McDuff (Columbia University)

Title: Embedding problems in symplectic topology

Abstract: This talk will be a gentle introduction to the world of symplectic geometry, and will explain some of the curious results about the question of when one region in Euclidean space embeds symplectically into another.
