Maryam, billiards and the magic wand (UZH, 12 May)

10 May 2022

May12 was recently declared an international day to 'Celebrate Women in Mathematics'. The date was chosen since it is the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani, Iranian mathematician who became the first woman to be recognised for her mathematical achievements by the Fields Medal.

To celebrate this occasion our member Corinna Ulcigrai (UZH) will be giving the following lecture at UZH accessible to all students:

Maryam, billiards and the magic wand

lecture given by Prof. Corinna Ulcigrai

May 12, 2022 - at 17:15 in Y15 G60

Abstract: Why mathematicians 'play' billiards? What do billiards and magic wands have to do with Maryam Mirzakhani, the first -and up to now the only- female mathematician who has been awarded the Fields medal (often known as the 'Nobel Prize' of mathematics)? In this talk, accessible to all Bachelor students, we will answer these questions and offer a glimpse of the beautiful mathematical work of Mirzakhani.
