"Cosmologie & Relativité Générale" Newly revised edition

10 Oct 2023

The newly revised edition and the exercises of Cosmologie & Relativity Générale (FR) by Alice Gasparini (UNIGE) are now available.

About:

Is modern cosmology a matter for specialists?

Is general relativity - which underpins our understanding of the nature and evolution of the universe - an insurmountable obstacle for anyone unfamiliar with Einstein's theses? Think again.

This book sets itself the challenge of helping you to discover and understand the many dimensions and issues involved in this field, on the basis of high school science and mathematics prerequisites.

The distribution of matter in the cosmos, black holes, gravitational waves, dark matter, particle physics and the tunnel effect are all on the menu of this unprecedented journey to the very edge of the universe.

This second, completely revised edition is enriched with new content, such as time dilation by gravitation, analysis of the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the amplification of the gravitational lensing effect. The extraordinary observational advances of recent years, from the detection of gravitational waves to the recent images from the James Webb telescope, are also considered and explained.

The many online exercises will allow you to complete and test your knowledge, and to realise, once you have finished the book, the extent to which the questions raised by cosmology go beyond what you could have imagined.
