Athéna colloquium

4 Nov 2015

NCCR SwissMAP together with the department of mathematics of the University of Geneva is organizing a series of 3 colloquia for highschool and beginning university students and for general public on November 4 and 18, and December 2, 2015. They will take place in Sciences II building, room A300. The talks will be given in French.

4 November 2015, 18:15 | Prof. Tatiana Smirnova-Nagnibeda, "Jeu de symétries"

Une introduction à la notion de groupes, fondamentale en mathématiques, permettant de décrire et comprendre les symétries des objets aussi divers qu’un ballon de football, un cristal ou encore des objets fractals.

 

18 November 2015, 18:15 | Prof. Martin Gander, "Mathématiques pour comprendre notre monde"

Problèmes de mathématiques appliquées: entendre la vitesse d'un véhicule, la forme de la tour Eiffel, les jeux de billard dans une tasse, le Sudoku par ordinateur, la compression d'images et le four à micro-ondes.

 

2 December 2015, 18:15 | Prof. Hugo Duminil-Copin, "Percolation, un jeu de pavages aléatoires"

Cet exposé propose une introduction ludique à la théorie mathématique de la percolation. À travers des exemples simples, nous explorerons certains concepts caractéristiques d'un modèle de physique mathématique: l'universalité, la criticalité et la fractalité.
